Tidewater Orchid Society Newsletter

October 2005

Meeting: October 2, 2 PM, Norfolk Botanical Gardens. Member donated Auction. We’ll meet in the Old Auditorium.

President’s Message

It was nice to see so many of you there for our first meeting of the season, with so many lovely orchids for display. This next meeting is our annual autumn auction when you can bring all your castoff backbulbs, divisions, those you have no room for, etc. Now is the time to let other members acquire some plants they might have been eyeing.

It is also time to think about our annual Holiday and Awards Dinner at 'Hits in the Park'. This dinner is a good time to fellowship with other members, whilst savoring good food. Please send a check made out to TOS to Sarah Wheatley. It is only twenty five dollars per person.

If you volunteered to bring refreshments this month, please do not forget.
       See you all October 2.

       David W.

Nov 6 – Rolf Wilhelm of Woodland Orchids will speak about Stanhopeae.

Dec 4 – Holiday Party at Hit at the Park

For future meetings we need a new Hospitality Chairman. Talk to Eleanor about the responsibilities and see if this is something you can help the society with. Even a couple of people can do this together.

CONSERVATION NEWS

Cypripedium calceolus (Yellow Lady’s Slipper) was ordered and will arrive in time for distribution at the October meeting.  Eighteen TOS members signed up to receive the plant.  If you signed up but cannot attend the meeting, please designate a surrogate to receive your plant for you.  The corm should be put into the ground as soon as possible.

Twenty-four members had received the Calopogon puchellus last year, but so far we have received only six filled-out questionnaires.  If your questionnaire is outstanding, please attend to this matter as soon as you can.  Either turn in hard copy at the meeting or find the questionnaire under “Forms” at the TOS web site and submit on-line.

Our thanks to Evelyn Walch and Tom Ward for the lovely photos of C. pulchellus.  Photos of your native orchids submitted as hard copy or over the internet are always welcome.

Conservation Chairman
