Presidents Message

October is here, so get your plants ready for the member donated plant auction.  Also make room for all those plants you will be taking home.  Tell family and friends so we have a great turnout.

Thank you to all our new committee heads for volunteering your time and efforts.  It is greatly appreciated.

Remember to pay your dues and sign up for our annual Holiday Party.

See you on the 7th,

Ruta Mah

A Message from the Past-President:

Dear  Members,

Please forgive me but at the August meeting I was caught completley by surprise when Ruta  presented me with a gift.  It is absolutely  Beeootiful.

It is a Blue Porcelain vase and on it is a lovely Cattleya. The pseudobulb and leaves are raised above the vase and have some green painted on them. The six-inch-diameter flower is also raised and painted a pale Lilac. The overall effect is gorgeous and I would like to thank the members for such a lovely gift and who ever chose that  particular vase a big thank you very much.

It’s beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.  I will always treasure it.

David  Wheatley, Retiring  President.

CONSERVATION NEWS

A Reminder:  The questionnaires for the Platanthera ciliaris (yellow fringed orchid), which was distributed to 20 society members last year, are due this month.  Please forward your questionnaires to my email address:  ajzuckerwar@yahoo.com or send hard copy to my home address or call me at home (See membership directory).  Note that my email address listed on the last page in the 2006 directory is incorrect.  You can find a blank copy of the questionnaire at the TOS web site. From the home page click on TOS Forms/Questionnaire for the cultivation of native orchids.

Please submit the form even if your cultivation experience was only partially successful (foliage only) or unsuccessful (no plant) or was spoiled by a predator.  This information is equally valuable for our data base.

Photos of your cultivated plants are always welcome, especially on-line.   The committee thanks Evalyn Walch for the lovely photo of P. ciliaris.

Vendor Introduction

A new feature of the newsletter will be an introduction to a vendor, grower or supplier of orchid plants, supplies, or art that may be of interest to us. I plan to meet with and interview many different vendors, beginning with our own members

The first to be profiled is Tom Voytilla of Everything Orchids. Tom and his wife, Tia, have been active members of our society participating in most functions and volunteering regularly to participate on committees and with functions. Their daughter helps as a runner most auctions. They grow many orchids (I think I remember Tom saying they are in the thousands) across many genera. They regularly bring their orchids for the show table and show many outstanding plants.

Recently Tom has started selling semi-hydroponic supplies as the exclusive local suppliers for First Rays PrimeAgra and pots. They promise significant savings and no delivery cost because they will bring any order to the monthly meeting. Just call or e-mail.

The Kaplan Conservatory

Thanks to so many of you who helped in what was a monumental task. You were able to move Arthur Kaplan’s orchids into the conservatory a few weeks ago and we are still currently getting them arranged on benches or hanging many of them up so we can now begin to acquire other orchids for the collection.

I have asked Ken Peterson to join me in selecting those plants we can take. We will try not to duplicate certain plants that may already be in the collection. However, anyone who has grown orchids for a long time knows that orchids are like families with a dozen children all of whom are different in appearance. So it stands to reason that unless a plant is a mericlone we might want to acquire several or many of the same plant particularly if it is a species. As an example we have from Arthur’s collection about a dozen and a half Laelia anceps and all of the blooms are different. We are hoping to get select divisions of awarded plants, well grown specimen plants, species, beautiful hybrids, etc. We know that individually any one of you may have a particular plant which to you is beautiful and well grown, but may not quite come up to the standards we are hoping to establish in our ODU collection. Therefore, some plants may not qualify to be in the collection and would have to be rejected

We are aware that many of the plants we will acquire could have gone to the Tidewater Orchid Society’s October donated plant auction. We do not want to take anything away from the Society but there may be some special plants or plant divisions that members may feel would greatly enhance the Conservatory and we are so appreciative of this consideration.  As this collection grows perhaps an arrangement could be worked out so that the Society could share in how the future divisions of the Conservatory plants are handled.

We already have several members who are coming in on a regular basis and helping in the Conservatory. As we progress there will be lots of places where many more of our members can be a great help and a vital part of what goes on. Anyone interested on being a part of this great orchid adventure please let it be known. We have facilities for a great Society library which has not yet been set up.

If you are interested in donating plants to the Conservatory please contact Steve Urick- e-mail <mariaurick@gmail.com>, or call Ken Peterson- e-mail <kep777@yahoo.com>. Plant donations to ODU are tax deductible.

The Conservatory will be open at 1 PM on TOS Sunday meeting dates for Society members to come and browse around. [Please note that this is one hour before the regular meeting starts].

Thanks again for all that each of you has done to support this wonderful project and thanks in advance for any plants contributions you might choose to make.

Sincerely,

Steve Urick, Curator
