Tidewater Orchid Society Newsletter

March 2006

Meeting: March 5, 2:00PM, Mills Godwin Auditorium at ODU.

Ray Barkalow of First Rays Orchids will discuss semi-hydroponic culture of orchids. He will have semi-hydroponic supplies for sale.

President’s Message:

I would like to thank all of you that brought plants for the show table. There are always a lot of first class plants and it was especially nice for Ken Peterson to start at the opposite end and talk about plants we usually do not see or hear much about. The Phals are coming into bloom so I expect to see a lot of them in the next couple of months.

At the February meeting our members nominated three members and the President put forward two names to be on the nominating committee. They are Charles Rhodes, Gil Gillespie, Louise Roesser, with Christine Cross and Frank Auerbach nominated by the president. Gil was nominated Chairman of the committee. The election is next month.

At our November meeting a young lady asked our speaker whether beginners should grow Gongora's over Stanhopea. He said to grow Stanhopea. Personally my Stanhopea have not bloomed but I have no problem blooming my two Gongora.

Nelda Pressly, a past President, was due to have a knee replacement February 14. How about sending her a card wishing her well and hoping we see her soon.

Hope to see you all at the next meeting.

The Kaplan Conservatory

Jon Herrell has posted the final agreement between the Kaplans and ODU on the website. Let Arthur know if you have any questions or if you can help in any way. The board will be looking for volunteers for a new committee for our participation in the conservatory. Ask Arthur what it’s all about.
