President’s Message
I send Holiday greetings to all. The holiday party
was a success with good food, good cheer, many awards and presents for all..
Many thanks to Sarah Wheatley and Sharon Peterson for all their hard work, and
thanks to Jo Reiker for organizing the table judging and awards.
The New Year will be soon upon us and our January
meeting will be here. This will be followed by the World Orchid Congress in
Florida. I am sure the attendees will have many stories to share with us all in
February. February also brings the Virginia Beach Home and Flower Show. At this
time we are planning an information booth with the other plant and garden
societies. We’ll see if there will be a further opportunity for a display
inside. The society booths will be in the entry foyer outside the hall. The
booth can be decorated as a display. I’ll ask for volunteers as we get closer
to the date.
Happy Holidays!

Merritt Huntington Memorial Symposium
Thanks to the support of so many enthusiastic TOS
members, the Merritt Huntington Memorial Symposium was a huge success.
Plato Mathews scheduled a wonderful slate of speakers, and Dot Pierce
spent countless long hours registering participants and making our elegant
nametags. Dave Bryan has provided
wisdom and guidance all three years of the symposium, and we appreciate his
outstanding work with facility set-up to meet our space requirements.
Joanne Bryan produced a wonderful program again this year, Sue Grasso did
a great job with hospitality, and Jerry Rogers provided valuable insight,
representing both TOS and VOS on the committee.
Thanks so much to Tom Ward who mentored us, obtained equipment, arranged
the judging presentation, and brought the November National Capital Judging to
the symposium. Special appreciation
goes to Eleanor and Gil Gillespie for their hard work with hospitality, for
loading/unloading plants and supplies, and for being available to provide
whatever help we needed – wherever we needed it.
Thanks to everyone who attended for making this a special event.

About
Bill Goldner
Bill
Goldner works
with wife and co-owner Lynn Evans-Goldner to develop the Woodstream’s
reputation as a source for quality Paphiopedilums and Phragmipediums. He has a
Ph.D. in Plant Physiology from the Pennsylvania State University, and also holds
degrees in Ecology and Botany. Bill
is: an Accredited American Orchid Society Judge in the National Capitol Center
and is Co-Chairperson (with Lynn) of the Paphiopedilum Forum held annually in
Washington, D.C. He the Chair of the AOS Research Committee and is a frequent
speaker on orchid cultivation, hybridization and adventure at conferences and
orchid society meetings. Lynn and Bill have spent a good deal of time visiting
orchids in their natural habitats in Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, Thailand, Malaysia
and India. Their plants have
received numerous AOS awards.
Woodstream Orchids has grown
and changed dramatically since 1990. As
a breeder and producer we focus on the seed propagation of Paph species and
complex standard hybrids and Phrags. In 2002, Woodstream Orchids began a joint
venture with Barry Fraser’s Papa Aroha
Orchids of Coromandel, New Zealand, bringing Barry’s amazing and unique
Paph flasks, seedlings and blooming size plants to the American market. Papa
Aroha’s Paph complex hybrids, species and novelty hybrids have been very
popular in Japan, and should not be missed!
In late 2004 Barry Fraser announced his retirement from commercial orchid
growing. Woodstream has purchased
much of Barry Fraser’s elite Paph breeding stock and thousands of seedlings,
and will continue Barry’s fine tradition by producing unique high quality
species and hybrid Paphs.
Woodstream Orchids is the largest active producer of seed-grown orchid
species and hybrids in the Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New
Jersey, New York, and Washington, D.C. area.
In the last few years WSO has become one of the largest breeders of Paphs
and Phrags in the United States. The
Woodstream Orchids nursery is located in Huntingtown in Maryland’s scenic
northern Calvert County, near the Chesapeake Bay, approximately 30 miles
southeast of Washington D.C. The nursery is open by appointment, Friday-Sunday.
Their web site and on-line catalog is available at: www.woodstreamorchids.com.
Bill welcomes preorders, which may be delivered when he comes to give his
presentation.
