Editor’s Message

When will winter get here? It has been nice to have the extra time to get the greenhouse ready. I still have my nobiles and Cymbidiums outside, but they’ll go in sometime this week.

We had a great meeting in November, learning all about Lycaste and their growing conditions. Evalyn has lined up some wonderful speakers so make time to attend the meetings.

If you have any suggestions for classes let Mitzi Lipford know at the meetings. She’ll be putting a schedule together soon.

I hope everyone has a great holiday season. See you in the new year,

Charles Rhodes

The Kaplan Conservatory

The Conservatory will be open at 1 PM on TOS Sunday meeting dates when we’re at the school for Society members to come and browse around. [Please note that this is one hour before the regular meeting starts]. Get there early enough to visit. You’ll see many plants in bloom and growing well.

Steve Urick, the curator, is looking for some nice and unusual tropical plants for the permanent collection. He’s already received some interesting trees and plants but needs more. He’s particularly interested in species bromeliads, nepenthes and terrestrial orchids, especially jewel orchids. He appreciates any help but he’s not looking for any hibiscus, banana, or tropical succulents. Send him an e mail at surick@odu.edu to let him know what you might have to donate.

Hospitality

Lori Delbridge, our hospitality chair, thanks all of you who help out with refreshments. She always needs help so if you find that interesting recipe that you’re not sure of try it on us. We’ll try anything and you’ll always get good comments, so if that pomegranate sardine tea sandwich sounds good to you and you want to try it bring it tour meetings. It’ll be fun.
