Meeting:
December
4, 5 PM, Hits in the Park restaurant at Harbor Park in
Norfolk. It’s our annual holiday and awards
party.
President’s
Message
We had a good turnout for the trial meeting at the Mills Godwin
Building. The Auditorium was excellent with stadium seating and a
walk-around mike and comfy chairs to sit in. The only problem was the plants
were all out in the foyer and not very accessible for viewing. It was rather
crowded.
A vote was taken to hold future meetings there and it was passed
unanimously after much discussion. I think that people said yes just so they
could sit in a chair that did not hurt their backside.
[ed. Note: A vote
to donate $2000.00 a year for five years to the endowment fund for the new
greenhouse at ODU was also passed unanimously.]
The "Merritt Huntington Memorial Symposium" was held in
Williamsburg on November 12. A good crowd, 120-130, turned out to hear
three good speakers: Alan Koch from "Gold Country Orchids" in
California, Ervin Granier from "Gran Blue Orchids" in Louisiana and
Luis Hamilton Lima previously with "Amazon Orchids" in Brazil.
Many beautiful orchids were purchased from
half a dozen dealers. It was difficult choosing which to get and now I have to
find room for them. Everyone seemed to have a good time, meeting old friends and
making new ones. Some of our members put in a lot of time planning the
show. I would like to thank the following: Joanne and Dave Bryan for all their
time and effort putting the show together, Dot Pierce for her tireless work in
Publicity and Tom Ward for getting such great speakers and dealers - especially
as he is so busy with the "Virginia Flower and Garden Show”. There are
many others involved who were also helpful.
Our next meeting is the Awards Banquet at "Hits In The Park" on
December 4 at 5 P.M. Reservations are required. Contact Sarah Wheatley 464-1424.
It’s not too late,
David W.
