Message
Welcome
to another year at TOS. I hope this will be a fun and rewarding year for
everyone.
This
summer brought with it "the big move" of Dr. Arthur Kaplan's orchids
to the ODU Greenhouse. This is an exciting venue to see orchids and to get
involved in for our members.
We
have an exciting year planned with a great line-up of speakers thanks to the
hard work of Evalyn Walch.
I
also want to take this opportunity to thank David Wheatley for being our
fearless leader these past two years. His hard work and dedication is
appreciated. His efforts enhanced our society with the introductory orchid
classes, the pavilion show, his rescuing orchids and making them available to
the society members.
As
a volunteer run organization, we rely on our members to keep this society going.
Everyone's efforts are appreciated. With this said, I call upon the membership
to fill 2 vacant committee positions. The Refreshments Committee needs a new
leader. We may want to re-vamp the refreshments table but we need someone
to step forward. Please! We also need someone to take over the Sunshine
Committee. Contact me if you can help.
With
the start of a new year dues are due. Please pay as soon as possible so you can
be included in our directory.
I
look forward to seeing you all August 26th at 2:00PM at ODU.

The
Arthur and Phyllis Kaplan
Orchid
Conservatory
On August 18, beginning at 7AM, approximately three dozen members and
friends, including some ODU staff and grad students, assisted Arthur and Steve
Urick, the new greenhouse curator at ODU, with the move of Arthur’s orchid
collection from his old home in Riverpoint to the greenhouse on ODU. With the help we were able to finish in time to enjoy a lunch
donated to us by the good people at Aramark, the food service company at ODU.
Steve was able to keep organized while the orchids and supplies sometimes
arrived three or four vehicles, each with approximately 30 to 50 plants, and
place them in group and species groupings. The plant movers
were so efficient that, as far as the editor could tell, not a single
plant was lost or severely damaged.
The plants are now growing accustomed to their new, state-of-the-art
home, enjoying the new fogging system, great air flow and ample light. The
conservatory portion is still under construction and has a few weeks left to
completion. If you see Steve ask him what he’s thinking about doing with the
Conservatory portion.
As we prepare to move our plants back into our own greenhouses you might
find something that Steve and Arthur might be interested in adding to the
collection. Ask them. I know Steve is already thinking of plants he wants to add
to the collection and you may have one of them.
