November 2005

Next Meeting: November 6, 2 PM, Mills Godwin building at Old Dominion University.

Rolf Wilhelm of Woodland Orchids will talk about stanhopeae. Please see directions after president’s message

  President’s Message

I would like to thank all the members who donated their plants for the October auction. The club did extremely well out of it. I also need to thank Arthur and his crew for their efforts in auctioning the orchids and to Sharon and Ruta for their work in tabulating who bought what.

We will be going to ODU for the November meeting- please see below for directions.

Nelda Pressly made the motion we give it a try, and it was carried unanimously.  In moving the meeting I realize it means a lot of people have further to drive. I'm sorry about that, especially with the cost of gas.

Do not forget we have the Orchid Symposium in Williamsburg on November 12 where we will have three great speakers who will be selling plants plus three other dealers selling plants. A sit down buffet lunch is in the price of the admission. Then the first Sunday in December we have the societies Holiday Party. Normally during our regular monthly meetings we do not have a great deal of time to fellowship, but this is one meeting we have ample time.

We need to think about a display at the Virginia flower and garden show.

All those who signed up for refreshments please do not forget.

I hope we have a good turnout for this meeting,

       David W.

CONSERVATION NEWS

Specimens of Cypripedium calceolus were distributed to 20 TOS members at the October meeting.  If you can’t put your plant into the ground right away, you may store it safely in your refrigerator a little while but do not allow it to dry out.  When planting, insure that the small white eye faces upward.  The questionnaires are due September 2006.

There is a timely Special Report in the October issue of the AOS magazine “Orchids,” entitled “Growing Cypripediums in the Garden.”  The article applies to southeastern Virginia, although the author specifies growth zones 2-5 but we are in 7-8.  Further, hardwood leaf litter, shredded if possible, may prove an effective substitute for mulch to preserve soil moisture, but don’t let it become compacted.  Note the emphasis on lime supplement to adjust the soil pH to a neutral 6-7.

So far we have received only 8/16 completed questionnaires for the Spiranthes cernua.  Members who have not yet submitted are urged to do so soon.  The questionnaire can be found at the TOS website under “Forms.”  On-line submission is a convenient way to do this.
